Introduction

Today we close our study of “The Armor of God”. For me this has been a blessing and an enlightening experience looking to each piece of the armor, what it represents, and how to apply each piece to my everyday life. We began our study learning that the battle we face isn’t between flesh and blood but against the darkness of this world. We then studied each piece of the armor starting with the “belt of truth”. It all begins with truth, not man’s truth but the truth of the Word of God. After learning the truth we put on the “breastplate of righteousness” knowing that the righteousness we put on was that of Christ because all of our own righteousness was as filthy rags (according to ). Now we prepared our feet with the “shoes of the gospel of peace”. We pick up our “shield of faith” and place upon our head the “helmet of salvation” to protect our body and mind from the incoming attacks. Once we have put on all the articles to protect the body its time to pick up our weapons for attack; “the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God” and that of prayer and supplication. which brings us to today.

Prayer And Supplication

Vs. 18 says “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit. What is Paul saying here? To answer this question i believe we need to look at a few words.

Prayer

What is prayer?

Prayer by definition is “a spiritual communion with God” another way of defining prayer is that its “a two-way communication between God and man sharing or exchanging intimate thoughts and feelings”.
So Praying would be “the act of entering into that communion with God”

Supplication

What is Supplication?

Supplication defined is “an act or instance of humble prayer, entreaty, or petition”. to better understand we could define it as “ a humble but earnest petition to God”.

Always

I don’t think “Always” need any defining. But just for understanding Always means that every moment, every breath, every blinking of an eye, and every thought should be in constant prayer.

Paul is saying here.

That we should “always be in a spirit of humbled but earnest communication with God”.

Prayer isn’t to be self-centered

vs 18 goes on to say “watching (focused) thereunto with all perseverance (steadfastness, not wavering) and supplication for all saints”.
Paul is telling us to be praying for all the saints because every child of God goes through these spiritual battles. There is no one exempt from battle. That’s why its important for you to daily put on your armor because your brother or sister might be in a battle for their very soul.

Paul’s petition for prayer.

As we continue into verse 19 and 20, Paul ask for prayers, “ and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the Gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak”. compare

Does God always answer prayers.

Colossians 4:2 KJV 1900
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
Colossians 4:2–3 KJV 1900
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:

Utterance

Paul ask that utterance be given. What he is asking for here is that he be given a spoken word or statement to share with others. I see this as a cry or prayer request for God to use him in sharing the gospel by God placing the very words in his mouth that needs to be spoken.

Boldly

We also see in this prayer request a plea that Paul may be bold in his proclamation of the Gospel. Paul didn’t want to be timid, shy or ashamed of his relationship with God and in sharing the gospel. Paul wanted to shout if from the rooftops I believe.
I also believe this should be an example to us today that we should be bold in our sharing of the gospel. Bold but not pushy or arrogant. Like Paul, I believe we should seize every opportunity for sharing the gospel.
Am I as bold as I should be in presenting the gospel? NO! Along with the Apostle Paul I humbly ask that you pray for me that utterance (the words) be given me and that I may boldly share my faith and the Gospel.

God answers prayers of believers

Today we have been discussing prayer and supplication. I want emphasize to you that prayer is a privilege that only a child of god has. I also want to submit that the only prayers God the father will hear are those that come from a repentant and humble heart. Meaning that for your prayers to be heard and answered by God you must be born again.
that “whatsoever ye ask of the father in my name he may give it you”.
(ESV) says “until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full”.
There are many unbelievers that pray for things thinking God will hear their prayers. I believe the first prayer that God will hear and answer would be that humbled repentant prayer of salvation. I further believe that once the prayer for salvation has been uttered and salvation has been recieved that God hears and answers every prayer.

What if it seems god doesn’t answer your prayer.

says “ Ye ask, and receive not, because you ask amiss”
Amiss defined is something not quite right ( out of relationship with God); inappropriate or out of place (out of God’s will)
What James is saying is we don’t receive because we ask while we are either out of a proper relationship with God or we are out of the will of God.
This morning I would love for you and God wants you to be in a right and proper relationship with Him. Maybe you have never accepted the free gift of salvation. The bible teaches us in the book of Romans chapter 10 verse 13 that “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord Shall Be Saved”. If we back up a few verses it tells us how to call upon Him. Verses 10:9-10
Maybe you have been saved but things just hasn’t seem right between you and the Lord. tells us that “if we confess our sins that he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” meaning we can be made right with God again.
(ESV) says “until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full”.
